What is Sotteok?

Sotteok is a popular Korean street food that consists of mini sausage and mini elongated/cylinder shaped rice cakes combined and alternated in a skewer. “So” is short for “sausage” or “sosiji” (소시지) in Korean and “tteok” (떡) is rice cake.

What is the flavor profile of this dish?

The flavor profile of this popular dish is meaty, spicy, and slightly sweet. Gochujang is typically used but some also will use ketchup and mustard.

Who invented Sotteok?

A Korean comedian named Young Ja Lee invented this popular dish after featuring it on television. It was later introduced to South Korea and has become a popular street snack since.

  • In a medium pot, boil 2 cups of water.
  • While waiting for the water to boil, create small cross diagonal slits on the front and back of the cocktail sausages.
  • Blanch rice cakes and cocktail sausages in hot water for 2 min. Then, place cocktail sausages on the side and rinse the rice cakes in cold water to prevent further cooking. Then, drain and pat dry the rice cakes on a paper towel or cheese cloth.  
  • Skewer and alternate between the rice cakes and cocktail sausages and brush them w/a bit of oil.
  • To make the sauce, in a small pan, combine water, gochujang, ketchup, honey, minced garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, mirin, and brown sugar together on medium low to low heat. Then, set it aside once it thickens.
  • In a non-stick 10” frying pan, add a bit of oil then 4 skewered rice cakes and cocktail sausages on medium to medium low heat for about 1-2 mins per each side. Then, brush the sauce onto the skewers on both sides.
  • For garnish, sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds, and enjoy!
